Democratic Lawmakers Were Shot in Targeted Political Attack.
St. Rep. Hortman and her husband were killed.
St. Sen. Hoffman and his wife were shot, wounded.
TLDR: A gunman impersonating a police officer fatally shot former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark at their home in Brooklyn Park, and wounded Minnesota State Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette in Champlin. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz characterized the violence as a “politically motivated assassination” and vowed a full investigation.
On June 14, 2025, two coordinated shootings in the Twin Cities suburbs targeted Minnesota Democratic lawmakers and their spouses.

According to local affiliates and national outlets, the first shooting occurred around 2 a.m. in Champlin, Minnesota, when officers responding to an emergency call found Senator Hoffman and his wife suffering from gunshot wounds.
Hours later, Brooklyn Park police encountered the same suspect at the Hortman residence, where he “immediately” opened fire before exchanging gunfire with officers and escaping.
Investigators recovered in the suspect’s abandoned vehicle a “manifesto” listing multiple public officials by name, along with “No Kings” protest fliers, prompting authorities to describe the incident as an act of targeted political violence.
Reactions and Investigation
At a press briefing, Gov. Walz delivered a series of poignant reflections. “We’re here today because an unspeakable tragedy has unfolded in Minnesota,” he said.
“My good friend and colleague, Speaker Melissa Hortman, and her husband Mark, were shot and killed earlier this morning in what appears to be a politically motivated assassination,” in a press conference. He added, “We are cautiously optimistic they will survive this assassination attempt,” referring to Senator Hoffman and his wife.
Public Safety Commissioner Bob Jacobson emphasized the gravity of the suspect’s disguise in the same press conference with Governor Walz. “This was a betrayal of public trust,” he said, noting the danger of impersonating law enforcement.”
President Donald Trump stated, “Such horrific violence will not be tolerated in the United States of America. God Bless the great people of Minnesota, a truly great place!“
Investigators from federal, state, and local agencies—including the FBI—are conducting an active manhunt. Authorities have urged residents to verify the credentials of anyone claiming to be law enforcement and to report any suspicious activity immediately.
